Basic anatomy teaches us that everything has a purpose or over time it would cease to be -– in other words, your body goes by the philosophy of "use it or lose it."  This seems exceedingly simple, but trust me it is true. Your body is an amazing living machine that has the incredible power to change at the demand of its environment or the request of its owner, whether consciously or subconsciously.  Over time, your body has the ability to adapt to almost any environment.  The one environment it has the most trouble adapting to is stress.  A story goes that when NASA was looking for the right stuff in an astronaut, their biggest concern was finding someone who could go into space and not get stressed out -- in other words, treat going into space like going into the office.  It would not have looked too good for an astronaut to faint or have a stroke on the way to the moon.  A certain amount of stress is required in our body at all times.  However, too much stress will kill you.  I contend that stress is the #1 killer each and every year in America.

Treatment for Acid Reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

When food is in your esophagus or food tube, it tells the stomach to create acid for breaking down the food coming and to stop when there is no more food.  Sounds simple enough, but we have to cross the diaphragm to get the food to the stomach.  The diaphragm is the only muscle that crosses the entire body.  It also creates a physical boundary separating the important processes of digestion and respiration.  Actually, the diaphragm expands and contracts to help fill the lungs with air.  So how is such a nice muscle the culprit of millions of people’s pain?  The answer is it is overruled by the evil culprit called stress.  When the diaphragm muscle is stressed, it tightens and the valve that controls access to the stomach is much harder to use and therefore food stays in the esophagus and the stomach continues to churn and create acid until all the food has come down.  Stretching the diaphragm muscle releases the esophagus and the food drops and the stomach quits producing acid.  A soft tissue release of the diaphragm can reduce the stressed tight diaphragm muscle and restore normal function.  Be sure to ask your local health care provider if they know how to perform this procedure -– not every one will know how or has performed this procedure before.
